When you’re not busy drooling over Channing Tatum’s shirtless body in Jupiter Ascending, you’ll be blinded by the film’s dazzling wardrobe. No, really---it took more than 1.3 million Swarovski crystals to create the 34 elaborate costumes in this sci-fi trip through the cosmos, which hits theaters today. And with 57 color assortments, 31 sizes, and almost 30 different crystal cuts, these pieces give the brightest stars in the film’s many galaxies a run for their money.
Mila Kunis’s character, Jupiter Jones, encounters intergalactic royals Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth, and Tuppence Middleton as she journeys through outer space---and they're all decked out in ultra-glam bejeweled looks by costume designer Kym Barrett. From Booth's crystallized jackets to Middleton's ethereal gowns, the opulence is overflowing. Even cooler, she used 3D printing technology to create some of the pieces.
For Kunis's character, the regal glam is a huge shift from the flannel button-downs and jeans she wears at the beginning of the film. Her standout costume: a wedding dress adorned with ruby-colored crystals and an out-of-this-world headpiece. Thanks to special visual effects, the gown’s floral details look like they’re blossoming---similar to the lavender dress that Kunis wears earlier in the film (sketch below). When it comes to her fashion choices, we'd say that Jupiter has certainly ascended.
