Body-baring looks, F-bombs, big laughs and aww-inducing tributes were the main themes of this year’s MTV Movie Awards.
As the show kicked off on the Warner Bros. Studios lot in Burbank, Calif. Saturday evening, hosts Kevin Hart and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson channeled their inner Mad Max and arrived in a souped up truck, with Johnson showing off his abs in a metallic cropped top to welcome everyone to the show.
And that was just the beginning of the duo’s antics. Their rap performance got some of the biggest laughs of the night, which focused on a scene in The Revenant where Leonardo DiCaprio got attacked by a bear. “You’ll always remember where you were when Leo was f**ked by a bear,” they rapped repeatedly as they pumped their pelvises in a line with their back-up dancers. Rebel Wilson and more chimed in from the audience as well, rapping about where they were when “Leo got f**ked by a bear.”
The hosts’ comedic routine aside, the winners of the night also brought on the laughs and a few heartwarming moments as well.
Charlize Theron (see, top) looked stunning as she hit the stage in a sheer lace Alexander McQueen dress adorned with bejeweled butterflies to accept the award for Best Female Performance for Mad Max: Fury Road. “I want to thank my beautiful son for putting a smile on my face. He was with me every day making this film," she said onstage. “I accept this award on behalf of my own little Furiosa, my daughter August Simone, and for all the furiosas out there.”
Ryan Reynolds was another big winner, taking Best Comedic Performance and Best Fight for Deadpool (the latter with Ed Skrein). When Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and Salt n Pepa announced him as the winner of Best Comedic Performance, he thanked his wife Blake Lively, saying, “Everything I do is to make her laugh, especially the sex.”
Meanwhile, Wilson and Adam Devine took home Best Kiss for Pitch Perfect and had one serious make-out session on stage after they accepted their popcorn trophies. And Will Smith and Melissa McCarthy went on to take home big honors for the MTV Generation Award and Comedic Genius Award, respectively.
“When I heard MTV Generation Award, I thought that was code for the old a** dude award,” Smith, who attended the show with sons Jaden and Trey Smith said with a laugh. “This June marks 30 years in this business for me…I’m humbled and I want all of you to know I’m dedicated to being a light to this world.”
McCarthy later crowdsurfed her way to the stage and said, “I may be the first woman to receive this award, but, I am certainly not the first one to deserve it. I think I’m a walking human patchwork of other remarkable funny women that I have loved and studied and I am only here because of [them].”
In addition to the winners, Ariana Grande rocked a sleek ponytail, pink strapless dress and a white fur shawl to sing “Trouble.” And as for those body-baring moments, Halsey performed in a butt-revealingonesie, and Alexander Skarsgard hit the stage in a blazer and no pants to present Movie of the Year with Samuel L. Jackson. The award went to Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
See the entire broadcast air tonight Sunday, April 10 at 8:00 p.m. ET on MTV.
