Carrie Underwood will bring the hills alive with The Sound of Music! NBC just announced the network will do a live broadcast of Rodgers & Hammerstein's musical next year, and the country crooner will star as beloved nanny Maria von Trapp. "Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn't be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp," Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, said in a statement. "She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist." The role was originally made famous by Julie Andrews in 1965's film version, which took home the top Oscar for Best Picture of the Year. The network plans to air the three-hour show about a year from now, around the holiday season.
