Melisandre, is that you? Game of Thrones’s red priestess has a knack for transforming herself (see Season 6’s episode, “The Red Woman,” for a reminder), and the actress who plays her, Carice van Houten, recently stepped out in Amsterdam looking almost unrecognizable.
While out with her partner, Guy Pearce, the fresh-faced actress showed off a darker 'do and as well as one major addition: her pregnant belly. Van Houten swathed her baby bump in a navy wrap coat and wore a pair of round black glasses, which gave her a vastly different look from what GoT fans are used to seeing.
The actress has been lying low since she announced confirmed her pregnancy on Twitter in March. “Ok. I’m ready for your shadowbaby jokes,” she wrote in her announcement—a reference to the demon child she birthed on the hit HBO series.
The actress also took to Instagram last month to show off her bump. "Almost don't fit the mirror anymore," she captioned the silly selfie.
No word yet on how the producers are handling van Houten’s pregnancy on the show. With filming delayed until darker, stormier weather sets in (as winter is finally here), the actress could even give birth before they call “action” on Season 7. But seeing as the Red Woman was banished from Winterfell and told not to return in the finale of the last season, the producers did set her up for a long absence.
We’ll have to wait and see what happens when Game of Thrones returns next summer.
