Ever since Cara Delevingne arrived on the model scene four years ago, she's made a name for herself on the runway for her smoldering stare and full arches (and inadvertently become the poster child of the bold-brow movement). Off the runway, she's known for her close-knit circle of famous BFFs (like Rihanna, Rita Ora, and Jourdan Dunn to name a few), her wacky attitude, and her downtown-cool, street-chic aesthetic. And now the model-actress-designer triple threat is bringing said aesthetic to the masses with a DKNY capsule collection.
The #CaraD4DKNY collection has Delevingne written all over it—literally. Her name is stamped on beanies, her face plastered on tees, and her lion tat embroidered on a varsity jacket (below). We got the chance to chat with Delevingne herself about the design process, her inspiration, and her favorite piece.
How did the partnership come about?
I had worked with DKNY for a few seasons, and I felt connected to Donna [Karan] and what her brand stood for. She is so inspiring and knows what it means to have fun with fashion while still being practical. It happened organically. Everyone at DKNY was so supportive and encouraging of my wacky ideas (hence the T-shirts and slogans). I felt comfortable being myself. It was refreshing to know that the collection would be an authentic representation of my style.
How hands-on where you in the design process?
I was involved in every aspect—I chose the cut, color, shape, fit, style. The collaboration is a perfect blend of my personal style and the DKNY brand. The most personalized aspect of the collection would be including my tattoos.
What was your inspiration?
I used my personal style and wardrobe as a source of inspiration. I also went through the DKNY archives and looked at some of the original designs from the '90s.
What kind of woman did you have in mind?
I was really thinking of my fans, both male and female. The collection is unisex.
What is your favorite piece?
That is such a hard questions because I really do love each and every piece, but if I had to pick one, it would be the lion bomber jacket.
Many of the pieces have an activewear feel. How do you envision them being worn?
Since I'm always on the go with my job, I wanted to design pieces that support an active lifestyle. You can wear them in your everyday life, from hitting the gym to going out.
And it looks like her collection already has fans! Delevingne ’grammed Joan Smalls, Gigi Hadid, and Kendall Jenner all sporting #CaraD4DKNY goods. The collection, priced between $70 and $735, is available starting today on dkny.com.
