The vast ranks of sunglasses designer Karen Walker's celebrity fans include Scarlett Johansson, Rihanna, Lena Dunham, Alessandra Ambrosio, Lorde, Gwen Stefani, and Beyoncé. Nevertheless, when it came to finding a star to feature in the ad campaign for her spring 2015 line, instead of one of these famous faces Walker chose a relative unknown, a gorgeous redhead called Toast.
Toast is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who was rescued from a puppy mill by comedian Josh Ostrovsky and his wife, publicist Katie Sturino. Her new owners restored her to health and made her a social media star, with more than 150,000 Instagram followers on her account Toast Meets World. Her trademark is her long tongue lolling out of her mouth—a legacy of her sad past (Toast's teeth were in such bad shape they had to be removed.)
In fact, it was seeing Toast wearing some of her glasses on Instagram that gave New Zealand–based Walker the idea for the campaign, which used fans to give Toast the windswept look of hanging out a car window. “We were after a model for this campaign who could fit with our caramel-y color palette and also someone whose hair would work with our three wind machines hitting her from every angle to create a slightly ’70s vibe," Walker said.
And Toast's good fortune may benefit some less-fortunate puppies. In addition to Toast's modeling fee, Walker made a donation to an American Humane Society-supported effort to stop poor breeding practices in puppy mills.
