2015 was and continues to be a major year for the transgender community, with outspoken stars like Orange is the New Black actress Laverne Cox championing equal rights and Jeffrey Tambor’s Emmy award for his portrayal of Maura Pfefferman in Transparent. It was Caitlyn Jenner, however, who shocked the world with news of her transition from male to female and a reality TV series (I Am Cait) to document it all.

That’s precisely why the 66-year-old headline-making figure is No. 7 on Time’s Shortlist, which also includes Donald Trump and the Black Lives Matter activists, among others, who stand behind the Person of the Year, German Chancellor Angela Merkel. In the video below, Jenner reflects on the freedom she’s found thanks to her public transition, and explains why doing so was such a struggle.

“For the first time in my life in many, many, many years, I actually wake up in the morning excited about the day. I can’t wait. I got so many things to do,” she candidly reveals. “You are still the same person, it’s just that now she gets a chance to live and it’s been a wonderful experience. And I want to make a positive impact on this community and on the world—open up this conversation.”

The former Keeping Up with the Kardashians star goes on to explain why discussing the rights of the transgender community is important, and also divulges on her outlook of the future.
