What do you do when you’re being sued for tax evasion? If you’re Dr. Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling) you convince your ex-boyfriend Cliff (Glenn Howerton) to be your lawyer with a little bit of lying and a great outfit.
“You couldn’t take your eyes off of her!” says costume designer Salvador Perez, and we agree! Her bold neon look (below) is one of our favorite outfits so far this season. "We happened to have the neon green Manolo Blahniks," explains Perez, who then built the outfit from the shoes up, pairing a Bailey 44 blouse and a Karen Millen skirt with a Topshop jacket. “It became so cinematic.”
Her ploy to get him to help with her tax troubles works, but unfortunately the lie gets her into an awkward elevator situation with Danny (Chris Messina), Cliff, and Brendan Deslaurier (Mark Duplass). For the scene, Perez chose a bright, pretty floral dress and BaubleBar earrings with the intention to make her look sweet and innocent. “Here she was in a elevator with three men she slept with, she had to look pretty!”
While Mindy was able to keep up the charade that she and Danny were on a break in the elevator, she wasn't able to turn down a dinner date with Cliff. Perez decided to keep her look for the scene ladylike, but made sure it wasn't too revealing. "There was a fine line between dressing her up for the date, but not being too sexy because she wasn't trying to seduce him," says Perez. Her conservative outfit seemed to have done the trick, as she was able to get her taxes completed with minimal drama on her end. Good job, Mindy!
We’ll be chatting with Perez every week about our favorite looks from The Mindy Project, so be sure to check back in next week!
