Not everyone can be dubbed the “Guys of the Decade.” Just take it from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck who nabbed the award at the Guys Choice Awards Saturday night...and called out several other stars who didn’t make the cut.
“I think it goes without saying that this is an award Matt and I have been dreaming about since we were little boys,” Affleck said as they accepted their award from Robert DeNiro at Sony Pictures Studios. “I did Gigli and Matt did that Liberace movie and all of a sudden it all seemed out of reach. Then, I did Batman and all of a sudden it was back in reach again. Now we’re the...coveted dudes of the decade.”
“We will cherish this, and we want to recognize some of the other nominees...some of the dudes who weren’t quite as decade-worthy,” Damon said, before adding with a grin, “George Clooney and Brad Pitt.” While there weren’t actually any other real nominees, the duo kept jokingly dropping names (and making the audience burst into laughter). “James Franco and Jonah Hill...Leo and Toby,” Damon continued. “Liam and Chris Hemsworth,” Affleck chimed in with a smile.
“Justin Bieber and Jaden Smith,” Damon quipped. They kept going, pointing out that other famous duos like Hans Solo and Chewbacca, Ben and Jerry, Siegfried and Roy and Hall and Oates also didn’t have what it takes to take home the title. “We’re honored to share this fake award with all of you,” the Martian star continued, taking a more serious turn after several jokes. “After decades and decades of friendship, I want to thank my ultimate man of the decade,” he added.
While at first it seemed like that would be Affleck, Damon made it clear that nod went to the many servicemen and women in the room. “Seriously, we would be remiss not to recognize the fearless men and women of our military service who are here tonight,” Damon continued. “Thank you all very much and finally we want to thank Spike and of course everybody who goes and buys a movie ticket. You’ve followed us through our careers. We just wouldn’t be here without you.”
Your move Clooney (and Pitt).
