We're calling it now: 2015 is going to be a big year for Helen Mirren. The actress, who is back on the big screen today in the drama Woman in Gold, also has been killing it on Broadway as Queen Elizabeth II in The Audience (a character that won her an Oscar in 2007). And did we mention she's turning 70 this July and has never looked better?
Mirren has reigned supreme on the red carpet for decades in gowns that are totally ageless and chic. Her signature look tends to balance sophisticated details, like hand-embroidered embellishments and long sleeves, with body-con silhouettes that show off her to-die-for curves. (Just look at the Dolce & Gabbana gown she wore to the this year's Golden Globes, above.)
While there is no doubt that the actress has mastered Old Hollywood glamour, there are also times when she gets playful. A few weeks ago, Mirren stunned at the Roundabout Theater Company's 2015 Spring Gala in a Carmen Marc Valvo gown with sheer side panels. (If you're wondering, she has credited Wii Fit workouts to get that bod.) And who could forget when she threw a leather biker jacket over her leopard print Dolce & Gabbana gown at the premiere of Arthur in 2011? It's those fashion risks, and the occasional beauty surprise (pink hair!), that puts her in a league of her own.
"Helen can be superbly regal and sexy at the same time," says designer James Mischka of Badgley Mischka, who dressed the actress in a beaded cocktail dress for the N.Y.C. premiere of Woman in Gold. We've come to expect nothing less from the Dame.
