"Ain't no mountain high enough!" Diana Ross sang it, and it's still true, especially for ESosa, the Tony Award-nominated costume designer behind the costumes of the new Broadway show, Motown: The Musicalwhich opened at New York's Lunt-Fontanne Theatre this month. His job was to tackle the mountain of a task to wardrobe a time when Motown reigned supreme. The show is inspired by the true story of how Berry Gordy, Jr. founded Motown Records and revolutionized music, which means the show's lead characters Berry Gordy (Brandon Victor Dixon), Smokey Robinson (Charl Brown), Marvin Gaye (Bryan Terrell Clark), and most notably, Gordy's love interest, the one-and-only Diana Ross (Valisia LeKae) belt out 59 of Motown Records' greatest hits, from The Jackson 5's "ABC" to Robinson's "You've Really Got a Hold on Me." While the set is minimal overall, it does allow for the glizty stage looks worn by Diana Ross and The Supremes to shine—thanks to ESosa's partnership with Swarovski, 247,000 crystals illuminate the designs (see the exclusive sketches above). "The costumes worn by Valisia LeKae in the role of Diana allow her to truly sparkle, so much so that audiences will feel they are actually seeing and hearing one of Motown's musical legends," ESosa said. Custom designs for a true diva—we wouldn't expect anything less. For tickets, visit motownthemusical.com.
