The red carpet has a long history of black gowns, and it's easy to see why—the dress is a classic that can swing from safe to dangerously sexy, with a thigh-high slit here or a strategically placed cut-out there. And thanks to the 2016 Oscars, we have three more memorable looks to add to the Best Black Gowns Hall of Fame.

Julianne Moore proved that cut-outs could be the most elegant detail ever in her plunging black Chanel Haute Couture gown that revealed glimpses of skin at each shoulder. But it was Kate Winslet who surprised us all when she stepped foot onto the red carpet in a gown that, at first glance, seemed quite conservative with its simple strapless silhouette. Cut from a liquid black silk lamé material, Winslet's Ralph Lauren Collection dress caught the light with her every movement.

And Jennifer Lawrence was fashionably late (she almost skipped the red carpet entirely) in her racy black lace Dior Haute Couture number with a dramatic tiered skirt.
