Where to Stay
One celebrity favorite is the legendary Hotel Gritti Palace (left; doubles from $741 to $1,522; Campo Santa Maria del Giglio 2467, 800-325-3589). Greta Garbo, Princess Margaret and Julia Roberts have all stayed at this 16th-century palace opulently appointed with checkerboard marble floors, gilded ceilings and Murano glass fixtures. For lovely accommodations at a lower cost, try the Pensione Accademia (doubles from $169 to $240; Dorsoduro 1058, 011-39-041-523-7846), a quiet retreat with two large gardens and rooms filled with antiques. The centrally located Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal (doubles from $221 to $558; San Marco 1332, 011-39-041-520-0211), a restored 1638 palazzo owned by the Benetton family, is another good choice.
