"Working on a ring with a client is about being a good listener and guide," says N.Y.C. jewelry designer Temple St. Clair, whose rings have a neoclassical spirit. "There are some designs that work better with certain shapes of stones than others." After meeting with a couple, she creates a mechanical drawing that shows "all the dimensions and every angletop, side, bottomfor the client to see before the ring is produced." Time: four to eight weeks. Starting price: $7,000.
