Natalie Wood was famous for nearly all of the 43 years she was alive. From
Miracle on 34th Street to
Rebel Without a Cause to
Splendor in the Grass to
West Side Story, Wood starred in a whopping number of classics. Still, she was never entirely comfortable with her fame. "I'm not a star," she once said. "I'm an actress." In fact, she was both, and a beauty icon to boot, flattering her delicate features with lush lashes, dramatic liner and elaborately arranged coifs. In other words, she played
all her roles to the hilt and, decades after her
death, remains a legend.
Wood was born Natalia Nikolaevna Zacharenko to Russian immigrant parents.
