THE ROLE Dee's lifefrom her childhood in Harlem to her marriage to Ossie Davis to her friendships with both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm Xis itself movie-worthy. The multi-talented performer was able to draw upon her experiences to enhance the role of Mama Lucas, a poor Southern woman who wasn't afraid to put her heroin kingpin son (played by Denzel Washington) in his place. This is the actress's first Oscar nomination.
HER RED-CARPET STYLE She's been in the business for more than 50 years, so this 83-year-old has walked a lot of red carpets. Though the petite Dee has worn a lot of black recently, she has favored colorusually purplethroughout the years, as well as bold prints and patterns.
