Roberts left Smyrna, Georgia, when she was still in her teens; as she said, back in 1989, "I didn't want to stay [there] and be a dental hygienist." She played a similarly restless small-town girl—a waitress—in her second film, 1988's well-regarded independent Mystic Pizza. While her black t-shirt (decorated with the jokey printed slogan, "A Slice of Heaven") didn't set any trends, it did provide the perfect simple showcase for her lanky frame and super-wide smile.
