HOW TO WEAR IT The first step for a bun like Natalie’s is unclean hair. “A little dirt never hurt anyone,” says stylist Alina Ratta of L.A.’s Jim Wayne salon. “A little back-combing goes a long way too.” Both create texture in the hair that help to secure the bun. Natalie’s modern side bun should be created as a regular bun would be, but pulled slightly off-center. The hair should be parted on top instead of slicked back.
PRODUCT TO TRY An alternative to unwashed hair is Bumble & Bumble surf spray. “Applying it to dry hair gives great texture and you can avoid the helmet hair look,” says Ratta.
