The extravaganza that took place at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday felt more like the Oscars™ than the Tonys, what with the influx of Hollywood stars.
Harry Connick Jr. opened the show,
James Earl Jones delivered a stirring monologue, and nominee
Ralph Fiennes displayed amorous behavior backstage (see photo). And much like Oscar night, the most breathtaking aspect of the evening was, of course, the fashion.
Julia Roberts ruled the red carpet in understated black Armani, while
Oprah Winfrey went for drama in a midnight blue Carolina Herrera gown.
Kyra Sedgwick,
Julianna Margulies, and
Anna Paquin were the ladies in red, while best actress winners
Cynthia Nixon and
LaChanze wore white. Whatever the color, all were turned out from head to toe in a way usually reserved for a certain evening with the Academy. Perhaps the night’s shining moment was when Julia Roberts, who was not nominated for her work in
Three Days of Rain, said to the crowd, “I just want to take this opportunity to say that you people are insanely talented.” Finally, a touch of New York honesty.
