CLASS ACT Sunday, January 29, 2006. Actors of the big and small screen gathered at Los Angeles’s Shrine auditorium to recognize their peers at the 12th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.
SO HAPPY TOGETHER Top individual honors at the more-relaxed-than-most awards show went to Philip Seymour Hoffman for
Capote and Reese Witherspoon for
Walk the Line, but cast closeness was the biggest story of the evening. The chummy 70-plus group from
Crash upset
Brokeback Mountain for best film ensemble, and in a seeming show of solidarityor a possible wardrobe malfunctionfour of the leading ladies from
Desperate Housewives (winner for best comedy ensemble) wore shades of purple.
ACTORS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS Adding to the lightheartedness of the ceremony were the quirky acceptance speeches by S. Epatha Merkerson of
Lackawanna Blues, who acknowledged her divorce lawyer and
Will & Grace’s Sean Hayes who jokingly thanked
Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee for “taking a chance on him.”
