MOVIE MAGIC Stars, indie filmmakers, sponsors and corporate types fêted film festivals out West with the Maui Film Festival on the island in the Pacific, from June 15-19, and the L.A. Film Festival, which kicked off on June 16 and continues through June 26.
THE HEADLINERS In it’s sixth year, the Maui fest drew nearly 22,000 people, including Helen Hunt, Jake Gyllenhaal, Mike Myers and the Wilson brothers. A little over 1,000 miles away, L.A. played host to Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Jessica Biel and Elijah Wood, among others.
THEY CAME, THEY SAW While other film festivals promise lavish parties and luxurious gifts, Maui’s crowd was wowed by the pristine locale and contributions made on the stars’ behalf to the Maui Food Bank and Film Aid International (they skipped the goody bags). In L.A., opening night was celebrated with a party at the Hollywood Palladium on Sunset Boulevard, where comfort foodfried chicken, mashed potatoes and coleslawreigned supreme.
