With fall well underway, our minds are officially on the holidays. And nothing quite screams 'season of giving' like the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Since its inception in 1924—and televised debut in 1952—the annual three-hour event has become a favorite tradition for many Americans. And so, every year on the fourth Thursday of November, we tune into NBC promptly at 9 a.m. EST to watch live coverage as the larger-than-life helium balloons float down the New York City streets, spreading holiday cheer.
While the parade’s musical guests and pop culture-inspired balloons vary from year to year, there are a few constants that we can always count on. For instance, the Radio City Rockettes consistently impress us with their classic routines, and the country’s best marching bands manage to keep parade-goers on their feet even in the chilliest weather. There’s also an abundance of familiar faces that we look forward to seeing, with Charlie Brown, Hello Kitty, and SpongeBob Squarepants among the returning balloons. And of course, there’s also Santa Claus, whose sleigh float makes its way down the down the street last each year, signaling the official start of the holidays (and that it’s time to really get to basting that turkey).
We’re still waiting to find out the details about this year’s sure-to-be spectacular parade—who will perform?!—but in the meantime, we’re looking back at 19 of our all-time favorite celebrity moments from the event. Scroll down to check them out.
