Confession: we have a slight love-hate relationship with waterproof mascara.

The product is an undeniable staple in our makeup bag—no matter how hard we cry while wearing the stuff, it never runs or flakes, and somehow manages to hold a curl even mid-swim. However, the problems arise whenever we're attempting to remove the product. Even with eye makeup remover, completely getting the inky noir formula off your lashes requires a little extra elbow grease, which can often result in a few lost lashes. Make a wish they grow back.

Luckily, pro makeup artist Nick Barose, who works with Priyanka Chopra, Lupita Nyong'o, and Kim Cattrall among many other famous faces, has a hack so simple and genius for easing the removal process, we're almost mad we didn't think to do this before.

"Start with a layer of regular mascara as your base coat, then do a second coat with the waterproof formula," Barose explains. "This helps to seal your lashes in a waterproof barrier, but is much easier to remove."

If you already cocktail your mascara formulas, this may not be a new concept for you, but is totally life-changing nonetheless. We recommend using a lengthening mascara as your base so that you can build up the intensity without the risk of a clumpy texture. Then, you can build up the waterproof top-coat, volumizing or otherwise, to your heart's desire.
