My hair has undergone some major damage in the last eight months or so. It's been excessively dry and simultaneously oily within a day of washing, it wasn't lying the way I liked, and I was experiencing lots breakage at the ends. Things are better, now — and I'll get to the why and how — but for a while there, it was a serious bummer.

I've previously mentioned a few products I'm using that have helped bring my hair back from the dead, and I want you to know that when I say I've tried a lot of products, I mean it. My shower has seen an obscene number of deep conditioners and moisturizing shampoos over the last few months.

And now, I want to tell you about my favorites — the ones I reach for over and over, and the ones I have no problem repurchasing and recommending.

But first: the why. I attribute the dryness and the oiliness to over-washing (once every day-and-a-half became a normal routine). I was over-washing because of the aforementioned oiliness, though, hence a cycle. To combat the urge to wash, I've been using dry shampoo and dry conditioner to give my wash more longevity.

Another important detail here is that when I washed, I would heat-style. My hair tends to be unruly, and so a heat-style session involves a blow dry, a quick run-over with the ol' flat iron, and then a curling iron. This was destroying my hair, especially since I wasn't using a heat protector consistently.

In my efforts to cool it (quite literally) with the heat-styling, I've timed my showers so I can air dry my hair almost completely, then I'll blow-dry on medium-to-low heat versus the full-blown heat hurricane option I was going with before (for speed-drying).

I've also been conditioning my hair with much determination and diligence.

This is a fatty, buttery, thick and gloppy hair savior. It smells divine, and my hair soaks up every last bit. I apply a very tiny amount to damp hair before blow-drying to protect and nourish. You can use it on dry hair, also.

I've been using this for years and years, and I recommend it to everyone looking for a super-hydrating hair oil that won't make your hair greasy. I don't know why I ever stopped using it, but the second I went back a couple months ago, I could tell an immediate difference in my hair quality.

The oil smells nice, and I use it both as a heat-protector before ironing/curling and as a serum at the ends. I cannot rave enough about this product. It works. Trust me.

This is another healing oil that works as a heat protector. However, I've been using it as a post-styling product. I do a very light spray all over to create a soft sheen. The first time I used it, I used too much, so the key is to apply sparingly.

Right now, I have about seven tubs of deep conditioner in my shower. This Madam C.J. Walker mask is the one I reach for most frequently, though, because it works. And I trust that it'll work every time. It's thick and creamy, smells lovely, and contains shea butter and coconut oil.

Another thing I'm doing is taking supplements to not only help my hair grow faster after all that breakage, but to help grow stronger hair. I'm absolutely open to trying other supplements, but right now I'm feeling pretty good about AVIVA.

My hair is still a work in progress, but it's getting there. A haircut (after my own attempt) certainly helped, and the way I'm mindfully styling and conditioning is helping, too.
